Preparing Video for DanceWorld.com

Video files come in many different formats, and Danceworld.com supports most of them but you still may have to process your video file a little before you upload it to the site.

Supported Formats:

(AVI, MPEG, MPG, MPE, DAT (VCD), VOB (DVD), WMV, ASF, ASX, MP4, MOV, 3GP, 3G2, 3GPP, DV, QT, RM, RMVB
(100MB Max file size)

The main reason for this will probably be due to file size. The maximum file size the Danceworld.com site can accept is 100MB. If your .avi, .mpeg, .mp4 or .VOD(DVD) file is larger than that, then you're going to need to reduce its size before uploading it. Luckily, there is a completely free, and easy to use program out there that can help you - HandBrake.

To download HandBrake for your PC or MAC, click here (note: Get the GUI version!)

Once you have the program installed on your computer, you can convert video files from one format to another, and at the same time reduce the file size.

This tutorial is going to show you how to convert a .VOB file (from a DVD) to an .mp4 file.

First: Put your DVD into the DVD drive on your computer, and open HandBrake

Select the DVD chapter for your performance

For this example, I'm using a StarPower: Stars on Stage DVD, and the video I want is a performance by Cassidy Wolf. I know her performance is chapter 2 on the DVD so: Select the DVD to convert First click on Source and then select DVD_VIDEO_TS Folder Select the VIDEO_TS Folder on the DVD Select My Computer, then your DVD drive, then the VIDEO_TS folder, and click OK. It'll take up to a minute for HandBrake to read your DVD. Once finished, it'll display the total run time, and allow you to select the chapters on the DVD to convert. I want chapter 2, so I select chapters 2 through 2, as shown. Selecting Chapters 2 through 2 Now I have the DVD and chapter selected, I need to tell HandBrake where I want to save my converted file, and what to call it. For this example I'm going to save the converted file to my computers desktop. I am going to call the file Cassidy, and save the file in the mp4 format. Click Browse, then click on the desktop icon. Then enter the name you want to give the file, and the file type. Select a location and file name for your converted file We're almost there! I have the DVD and chapter selected, and I have chosen a name for my file, its format and where to save it. Now we need to select a conversion process to make sure the file size is reduced enough for Danceworld.com. Select a conversion preset Select Ipod in the presets section. This will automatically set the video width to 320, which is perfect for the Danceworld.com site. Then click on the video tab. Set the target video size to 100 Set the Target Size to 100. This will ensure your converted file does not go over the maximum size allowed on Danceworld.com. You could select a smaller file size, but while that would result in a faster upload to Danceworld.com, it might also reduce the converted video quality. If you have time, try converting your video using a few different settings to test for the best results. Convert your file The last step is to convert the file. To do that, click on the Start button. You'll see a new window appear, which shows you the progress of the conversion. Once finished, this window closes, and you're left with the converted file in the location you selected. In my case, I ended up with a nice mp4 file for Cassidy's performance which was 93MB in size. Good enough to maintain video quality, and small enough to upload to Danceworld.com
